
Rose, Thorn, Bud
What is it?
This tool helps you receive and provide meaningful feedback on projects. Feedback is given more structure with coloured post-it notes: pink 'Roses' for positives, blue 'Thorns' for negatives, and green 'Buds' for opportunities.
Why and when should I use this?
You can use this at any stage of your project, especially when you are trying to get others on board and include points of view of from various stakeholders. This feedback method is applicable to most scenarios, it is not resource intensive, and can be done quickly in person or digitally. This is a great way to identify quick points that will improve and help you grow your ideas.
How much time should I spend on this?
5 to 10 minutes. You can spend more time on this activity if you want to discuss and dig-in into each point.
Who should I involve in this?
Your colleagues, peers, and a range of stakeholders can provide critical insight. Engaging users and higher level managers this way can help you gain buy-in as they will provide tangible feedback that can shape the project's trajectory.
How to use it...
- Grab pink, blue and green post-its: Put your three blocks in from of you. Pink will be your Rose: positives, Blue will be your thorns: issues or challenges, and Green will be your buds: opportunities or things to think about.
- Listen carefully and actively: As you are being presented with an idea or a concept, listen carefully and take notes.
- Write your feedback: Take notes as the presentation is going. To offer constructive guidance, use Rose post-it's to describe positive things, Blue (Thorn) to highlight potential issues or challenges and Green (Bud) for opportunities.
- Share your feedback: Share your thoughts and make sure to leave your notes on the presenters' Idea Framer or presentation materials so they can review and adapt their ideas.
