Purpose Primer

What is it?

The Purpose Primer is a simple framework to unpack the key elements of your problem and pull out information that will help you understand and clarify your challenge.

Why and when should I use this?

At the start of a project your brief is only a rough outline of what you will do. A Purpose Primer can help to open up the ask with your client to bring important information to light that will shape your direction, help you focus your efforts and develop a shared understanding.

How much time should I spend on this?

10-30 minutes. The time you spend on this activity will vary depending on the number of people you work on it with and the level of detail and conversations you go into.

Who should I involve in this?

You can use this with your project team, with your 'clients' and strategic stakeholders who have a stake in your project to understand what they are trying to achieve.

How to use it...

  1. Place your challenge in the middle: In a group of 1-5 people, write your initial challenge statement and stick it the the centre of the framework. This describes the purpose of your project as you know it.
  2. Fill in each quadrant: Working clockwise, set a timer for 3 minutes and start filling the Vision quadrant individually. Repeat for each heading: impact, challenges and people. Be as specific as you can!
  3. Discuss with your team: Discuss the insights with your group. You should find that new information has been shared about who you could speak to or hidden challenges that will shape what you do next.
