Creative Matrix

What is it?

The Creative Matrix is a tool for stimulating idea generation at the intersection of different topics. It brings together challenges with a range of personas to ask: What ideas would work for different stakeholders?

Why and when should I use this?

The headings you choose will push your group to come up with new, innovative ideas. They prompt you to think about solutions to challenges from the perspective of core stakeholders and what would suit their circumstances. Working in a few groups on different matrices also means you can run rotations to come up with even more ideas.

How much time should I spend on this?

20 minutes, with an additional 5 minutes for rotations. Adding an element of competition can help you come up with more and better ideas – try 'who can come up with the most ideas' or 'who can draw each of their ideas'.

Who should I involve in this?

Do this with the team you are working with.

How to use it...

  1. Fill your headings: The horizontal headings are How Might We challenge statements and the vertical headings are personas of people most affected by them. take some time with your team to decide on and write up key three challenge statements and three personas that relate to them.
  2. Get your ideas down: Working individually, start to generate ideas at the intersections of the grid. It helps to start off in silence to limit distractions and build momentum. This is about coming up with ideas rapidly, so set a timer and see what you can come up with!
  3. Fill in gaps: Review spaces on your matrix and try to come up with ideas so you have several for each intersection.
  4. Prioritise ideas with potential: Take some time to take in all the ideas and vote on ones with the most potential to be developed into solutions.
