Challenge Statement
What is it?
This technique is a simple way to summarise your challenge to the information you need. It helps you to write a compelling and concise statement that communicates to anyone.
Why and when should I use this?
When you are starting a project, challenge statements are a way to get everyone on the same page about what the challenge is. Adapt and re-write your statement as you progress so it serves as an up-to-date account of what your focus is, helping to frame what you do next.
How much time should I spend on this?
10-15 minutes. The time you spend on this activity will vary depending on the number of people you work on it with.
Who should I involve in this?
You can use this with your project team and clients at the start of the project and continue to refine your challenge statements with your project team as you go to reflect the challenge's definition as you learn more.
How to use it...
- Pick up several blank A6 cards: In a group of 1-5 people, each write a summary of what you think the challenge is on individual cards. If you have a brief, you can use this to pull out key information, including who is affected and what the impact is.
- Dot vote to decide: Bring your statements together and hand out 3 dots per person. Take a minute to read the cards then, at the same time, everyone votes on the strongest statements. There might be more than one.
- Refine your statement: As a group, decide what elements you can adapt and improve – this might include combining elements of your statements into one. This challenge statement will be your starting point.
